On ethics in media (and life)

Nov 22, 2023

I don't think I realized it at the time, but ethics was one of the most impactful courses in journalism school.

It was held at a large circular table that filled the whole room, and the discussions and debates around that table represented a certain optimism for me: That ethics — not just in media, but also in life — matter enough to be discussed and debated.

I think about that table and how such a concept can be so easily ridiculed and disregarded in our current world. It’s much easier to indulge — in bread and circuses, in money and power, in the wishes of the shareholders or investors — than to engage.

But the table matters even more today.
